The 2026–27 Club Championships will commence at the start of September 2026 and run until the end of May 2027.

The competition consists of two sections: Championship/Open and U1800/Major. The Open section is open to all players. The U1800 Major section is open to players whose July 2026 published WCU rating is below 1800. Players may enter either section that they are eligible for. Once a player has played their first game, they are fixed to that section and cannot change for the rest of the season.

Players arrange their own games with opponents. This can be done however the player wishes. Common is to join the Cardiff Chess Club WhatsApp community and ask for availability there. If a player is repeatedly avoiding or declining a reasonable challenge, a default win will be awarded.

Players may play each opponent twice, once with each colour. By default, colours will be decided randomly just before the game starts. If both players agree, colours may be decided in advance, either by mutual agreement or, if both players are in the WhatsApp community, by using the WhatsApp command “!colour”. If a second game is played, the colours shall be reversed.

All games must be played during club nights on Wednesday evenings, starting at 19:30. If you are late, the clocks will be started regardless. Report all results to Sam Jukes.

The time control is 60 minutes each for the first 30 moves, followed by an additional 20 minutes each for the remainder of the game. No increments throughout. Note, this is an additional 20 minutes, not 25 minutes like in the league.

Points for wins and draws are awarded according to the opponent’s published rating (see below table).

Players finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each section will be saved on the podium. There will also be a Top Junior (Under 18 as of 1st July 2026) and Top Woman podium place. These are determined by the highest-scoring player, regardless of section. A player may qualify for more than one podium place.

In the event of any tie, sonneborn berger tie breaks will be used.

All games will be played in accordance with the rules of the East Glamorgan Chess Association unless otherwise stated previously.
